The bloodlust expressed by our culture today is in no way a result of violent movies, raunchy music or graphic contact sports. While many miniature dictators in waiting would love to point fingers at today’s society and scream foul, our passion for aggression in sport is something that dates back thousands of years.

Who did Rome’s most sensitive blame when gladiators entered the Flavian Amphitheatre – the Colosseum? By all accounts, combat sports predate even the great Roman monument. Some historical records show the Ancient Chinese and Egyptians sanctioning similar contests.

The fact of the matter is that combat sports have always been with us, and they’re actually incredibly tame today by yesteryear’s standards. That doesn’t stop some people from trying to abolish the sport altogether, but let’s face it: these same people suggest that kids in school shouldn’t play tag because it’s “unfair” and allows kids to actually touch. Prude doesn’t quite cover it.

Like it or not, combat sports are a part of our lives now; they’re part of mainstream sports. Whether we’re talking about MMA, boxing, hand-to-hand combat, amateur wrestling, etc, combat sports are as prevalent in our culture as any other.

Although we’ve established that the Internet and culture of instant media didn’t give rise to the sport, we can still thank the online world for providing us with many avenues to bet on the matches.

From sports books in American to online casinos in Australia, you can find quite a few places to lay your money down on a fight. The Internet is simply the bridge which allows two genres to come together – the fight fanatics and the gamblers.

It’s really a perfect marriage, as we see with football, cricket, baseball, basketball, and dozens of other sports. It was only a matter of time before combat sports got their fair shake from the computerized bookies.

Betting on combat still isn’t at full strength, but it’s getting there. Currently, boxing and MMA matches are pulling in billions through bets, and that’s a good sign that other combat sports are sure to follow.

This is important to fight fans for one reason: where the money goes, so goes the media. So as betting becomes more widespread, watching the fights becomes more popular, and that means little-known niche combat sports will have their day in the sun sooner than expected.

The net is no longer just a place to play slots online; it’s now a launching pad for the sports we want to see brought into the light. The best news: it’s happening a lot sooner than expected.
